This is a XT-IDE 8Bit ISA IDE Adapter Rev 4 bootable storage adapter for IBM PC Clones, PC/XT, PC/AT , 5150, 5160, Amstrad PC1512, PC1640 and many other PC clones.

Requires a IDE to compact flash / SD adapter or IDE hard disk, not provided.

Comes with programmable BIOS rom configured for default settings port 300h.

Features

Allows the host PC to boot from connected storage which appears as a standard DOS Hard Drive.

This card supports the standard I/O port range of 0x300-0x31F, or 0x320-0x33F.

Micro SD and SD card IDE adapters and Compact Flash cards are easy to setup and use with the XT-IDE board. CF cards are not 100% reliable. SanDisk Ultra / Ultra 2 recommended.

The IDE adapter or hard disk should be powered by a separate supply from the PC.

Supports Master and Slave configuration.

Setup

Partition the hard drive / cf  sd card using the XT-IDE and host PC.

Depending on DOS version partition sizes may be limited for example MS-DOS 4.00 to 6.22 allows up to 2 GiB FAT16 partitions.

Initially your hard disk may not boot after formating in which case boot from floppy and using the DOS command “FDISK /mbr” to repopulate the master boot record. See the example Amstrad PC1640 project above.

The board can be provided as shown with IDE pin header connector or with a right angled IDE socket. See below.

The little arrow at the bottom of the IDE socket identifies pin 1 which corresponds to red wire on the IDE cable.

 

 

Note the orientation of the card. The IDE cable is towards the inside of the computer with the blue LED towards the edge/outside of the computer.

Alternative right angled IDE socket can be fitted on request
