The Problem

Being a Retronerd, I have quite a few examples of the Commodore 64 and Vic 20 in my collection. Many of these use the same din plug power supply except for the very early Vic 20’s. If you own either of these computers you need the Commodore 64 Saver.

A recent failure of a Commodore 64 revealed the voltages being supplied to be much higher than the nominal 5v. This was due to the power supply providing about 5.7v which is very damaging. I immediately disconnected this power supply from the computer. Further testing revealed the voltage continuing to increase over a period of about an hour to 5.9v. I’m assuming this was in proportion with the increase in temperature. It was unclear how long the computer had been subjected to these increased voltages. This overvoltage resulted in damage to the PLA and ram chips. This was very lucky as it could have been much worse..

I have many other power supplies which could also be afflicted with the same problem. These would therefore need regular checking before powering on the computer each time, but what about protection while in use?

The Solution

I can’t recommend the Commodore 64 saver enough. It immediately kicks into action at the slightest sign a power supply begins to fail.

I also built a custom case which glows green if the power supply is good and red if the power supply has failed.
